Canyon Crest Academy’s girls tennis team reached the San Diego Section Open Division finals last year only to lose in excruciating fashion.

The Ravens tied Torrey Pines 9-9, but lost based on total games won, 76-71.

Said CCA No 1 singles player Chaeyule Kang: “We didn’t want a repeat of that.”

On a cool, overcast Saturday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center, the Ravens made sure there would be no nail biting this time, defeating Del Norte High School 13-5 to win the Open Division crown.

To put an exclamation point on the Ravens being the section’s dominant girls program, it’s CCA’s third Open Division title in the past four years.

CCA split two matches against Del Norte this season, both by 10-8 scores. Kang and No. 2 singles Kaelyn Liu cemented Saturday’s rout.

Kang swept her three singles sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0. Liu won two of three sets.

Division 1: La Jolla Country Day 10, Scripps Ranch 8

Mike Reisinger has served as La Jolla Country Day’s coach for seven seasons but has been involved in the program for nearly three decades. The last time he shaved his beard: 13 years ago.

“These girls have never seen me without a beard,” he said.

He made a pact with his players. Win the section and off comes the beard.

“They want it off by Monday,” said Reisinger. “I’ve got to find a good barber shop. I need some professional help.”

It was a blend of youth and experience that led the way for LJCD. Senior Mia Thiele won two of three sets, as did freshmen Brynn Rothschild and Emma Li.

Surabhi Raghavendra won all three singles sets for Scripps.

Division 2: La Jolla 12, Steele Canyon 6

Only one program has won more girls tennis section championships than La Jolla and that’s Torrey Pines with 31. The Vikings inched closer to the Falcons on Saturday, winning their 25th title.

“Twenty-five, that’s a nice round, even number,” said La Jolla’s No. 1 singles player, Elle Kearney. “I mean, I know it’s not an even number, but it sounds nice.”

Kearney won all three of her three singles matches, 6-2, 6-1 and by default. The doubles team of Elena Farrar and Emily Uptham swept three sets. Anya Rastogi won two of three singles sets.

“We had a tough start to the season, getting the team chemistry” said La Jolla coach Jack Kruger. “But they got with the tradition of La Jolla tennis and peaked at the right time.”

Division 3: Clairemont 10, University City 8

It had been 50 years since Clairemont won its one and only girls section tennis title. On Saturday, the Chieftains penned another chapter to their history. Leading the way was sophomore Jaelyn Bishop, who swept her three matches, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0.

“I knew there was some kind of talk about it being a long time,” said Bishop. “But 50 years? I didn’t know that.”

The fourth-seeded Chieftains’ path to the crown was arduous. They beat No. 5 Coronado in the quarterfinals 9-9, winning by total games, 80-77, then upset No. 1-seeded Valhalla 10-8 in the semis.

The doubles team of Samantha Fisher and Ruby Arreola won two sets. Making the title even more meaningful: Clairemont won after graduating 12 seniors from last year’s team.

“I truly believed they were capable of this,” said head coach Kenn Baniqued. “It was a matter of them working hard and believing in themselves. Girls this age sometimes don’t believe in the things they can accomplish.

“I think this is a good life lesson.”
