With the start of the CIF San Diego Section playoffs in football, boys water polo and girls field hockey, The Bishop’s School and La Jolla High School advanced in all three sports, while La Jolla Country Day School was ousted in all three.

Here’s a recap of all the results.

Football

La Jolla High 27, Madison 15

Going into the postseason with two consecutive losses, sixth-seeded La Jolla hoped to right itself in its home match-up against No. 11 Madison in the first round of the Division II playoffs Nov. 8.

After trailing by six points at halftime, Vikings quarterback Hudson Smith threw touchdown passes of 21, 48 and 39 yards in the second half to help secure the victory.

Smith passed for a total of 260 yards and four touchdowns with one interception. La Jolla’s defense held Madison to 228 total yards and intercepted two passes.

With the win, the Vikings (7-4) advanced to the quarterfinals, where they will face No. 3 Helix (4-6) on the road at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 15.

Bishop’s 49, Mount Carmel 20

After a slow start to their season, the Bishop’s Knights ended the regular schedule on a 5-1 run and entered the Division II playoffs as the seventh seed, facing No. 10 Mount Carmel in the first round Nov. 8.

The Knights wasted no time taking the lead, with quarterback Cash Herrera throwing a 21-yard touchdown pass to his top receiver, Ian Browne. The Knights continued to pour it on, entering halftime with a 28-7 lead.

After the half, the Knights picked up where they left off, with running back Ruben Gutierrez III rushing for his second touchdown of the night. They scored two more TDs and cruised to the win.

Bishop’s offense gained a total of 386 yards — 205 rushing — and the defense held Mount Carmel to 292 yards and forced two fumbles.

Bishop’s (7-3) next faces second seed Mater Dei (also 7-3) in the quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Nov. 15.

St. Augustine 16, La Jolla Country Day 0

Entering the postseason following a blowout victory over Francis Parker the week before, Country Day hoped to keep the momentum going by keeping St. Augustine winless in the teams Division III first-round playoff game Nov. 8.

The Saints lost all 10 regular season games but were seeded seventh in the division, ahead of the 5-5 Torreys, who were seeded 10th.

Country Day’s defense played well, forcing a fumble and holding St. Augustine to just 227 total yards. However, the Torreys couldnt get it going on the offensive side and were shut out for the first time since 2013.

Their best opportunity came on an 11-play drive in the second quarter that ended on the Saints’ 1 yard line when Torreys senior Garrett Ace, who rushed 19 times for 92 yards, was stopped on fourth down.

Country Day senior quarterback Jack Levin completed 20 of 29 passes for 157 yards, and junior Quentin Cesaire caught six passes for 57 yards.

Boys water polo

Bishop’s 18, Poway 8

After losing 12-11 to Cathedral Catholic in the CIF San Diego Open Division championship game last year, Bishop’s started the playoffs this season as the divisions second seed and defeated No. 7 Poway on Nov. 6 in the quarterfinal round.

Bishop’s (16-10) next is scheduled for a semifinal showdown against third seed La Jolla High (19-5) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Coggan Family Aquatic Complex on the La Jolla High campus.

La Jolla High 15, Torrey Pines 11

As with Bishop’s, La Jolla’s hopes of winning the Open Division championship last year were cut short by Cathedral Catholic, making the Vikings hungry for the title this season.

But first, the third-seeded Vikings had to take care of business against No. 6 Torrey Pines last week.

The teams had played each other in early September, with La Jolla winning 13-7. Almost two months later, the result was similar — a 15-11 Vikings win.

In the semifinals, La Jolla (19-5) is set to face off against in-town rival and No. 2 seed Bishop’s (16-10) at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12.

Grossmont 13, La Jolla Country Day 11

Country Day, last years Division III champion, entered this years postseason in Division II last week with momentum after ending the regular schedule on a 7-2 run and taking first place in the City League.

In the No. 7 Torreys first-round match-up against Grossmont, the game was close from the first whistle to the last, but the 10th-seeded Foothillers came away with the narrow victory.

Country Day ended the season 14-14 overall.

Field hockey

Bishop’s 2, La Jolla Country Day 0

After a 22-1 regular season and 10-0 record in the Western League, Bishop’s entered the Open Division playoffs last week as the No. 1 seed against crosstown rival Country Day, ranked No. 8.

In a rematch of their final game of the regular season, which the Knights won 6-0, the quarterfinal game was closer but the winner was the same.

With the victory, the Knights picked up their 11th straight win. The top-ranked team in California will host division fourth seed Cathedral Catholic (18-6) — which handed the Knights their only loss all season — in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. Nov. 12.

La Jolla High 1, Canyon Hills 0

La Jolla’s strong season placed the Vikings as the No. 2 seed in the Open Division playoffs, and they began their postseason campaign Nov. 7 with a quarterfinal match-up against No. 7 Canyon Hills.

With the shutout win, the Vikings (14-5) advanced to the semifinal round, where they will host No. 3 Scripps Ranch (17-9) at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 12.
