OCEANSIDE — Second-seeded Orange Glen faced off against top-seeded Southwest-San Diego in the CIF San Diego Section Division 5 championship game at MiraCosta College Saturday.
And for the third straight playoff game, Orange Glen lost two of the first three sets.
Could the team rally again?
Not this time.
Southwest beat Orange Glen 24-26, 25-18, 25-20, 25-23 for the division championship. The Raiders clinching point came on a service error.
Southwest-San Diego coach Alexys Ramirez said the hard work all season paid off. Saturday marked the schools second section title.
“It’s amazing. It feels great,” Ramirez said. “I knew they could do it. I knew they had it in them. They worked really hard all season. They werent capitalizing on their third strong hit that they have, but they managed to pull them, really proud of them for sticking to it.”
Leading the way for the Raiders (16-16) was junior Brianna Hernandez, who had a game-high 10 kills.
“I think it was confidence, she said. I think it was good communication (with my teammates).
Hernandez also added two of the team’s 12 service aces, with nine coming in the third and fourth sets combined.
“I did want us to use our strong serves,” Ramirez said. “So, I feel like that did help us out, putting them on a system, on strong serves, and playing defense, organizing our defense and keeping every part of the court covered.”
Junior Addison Bruzzi led the way for Orange Glen (14-14), notching eight kills. Before Saturday, the team had won 10 of its previous 12 matches.
High Tech High beats Lincoln in 5 sets
After a back-and-forth affair, No. 2 High Tech Mesa outlasted top-seeded Lincoln in five sets, 3-2 (17-25, 25-22, 25-21, 15-25, 15-11) to win the Division 4 championship.
High Tech Mesa senior outside hitter Katie Muse had a team-high 10 kills.
High Tech jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fifth set before Lincoln scored five of the next six points to take a 7-6 lead, forcing High Tech coach Damien Plingos to call a timeout. The coach used his second timeout moments later, after the Hornets scored three straight points to take an 11-9 lead.
The Thunder (20-11) then went on to score six straight points to win, which included senior Yesenia Aguirre’s sixth ace of the match.
“I recently started trying to do some floaters,” Aguirre said. “Its just a matter of messing with the other team, whether it is either serving deep or serving short and moving them around so that they dont predict where Im going next. ”
Plingos called the programs first section title unreal.
“I still dont know what happened, he said. It is absolutely amazing. Im so happy for our players.”
Lincoln (26-8) was led by junior middle blocker Sariah Smith, who recorded a match-high 22 kills.
Both Orange Glen and High Tech Mesa will find out their seeding in the SoCal Regional Tournament on Sunday.
