The Union-Tribune’s John Maffei picks 10 of Friday’s biggest high school football games. All games at 7 p.m., unless noted:

Valley League

Oceanside (6-3, 5-0) at Valley Center (7-2, 5-0)

Preview: Led by quarterback Joseph Vinup, Oceanside has won three in a row and is in a position to win a league title. Vinup has thrown for 1,130 yards and 19 touchdowns. Neke Letuli has 60 carries for 489 yards. The Pirates have three receivers with more than 200 yards. The defense has given up just 145 points. Linebacker Esaias Juarez has 55 tackles and five tackles-for loss, and defensive lineman Hezekiah Wells has nine sacks. … Valley Center has also won three in a row. Braylon Mitchell has thrown for 1,572 yards and 18 TDs. He has a pair of quality receivers in Jesse Morales and Jhett Puentes-Stehly. Bear Morales has rushed for 801 yards and 10 TDs. The defense is led by defensive lineman Daniel Stehly, who has 113 tackles, 33 TFLs and leads the county with 14 sacks. … The Pirates and Jaguars hadn’t played since 2009 before Valley Center upset Oceanside 14-7 last season.

Prediction: Valley Center 21, Oceanside 20

Vista (2-7, 0-5) at Rancho Buena Vista (1-8, 0-5)

Preview: Vista’s two biggest schools have a combined three wins, none in league play. Still, this is one of the county’s most bitter rivalries. Vista has lost its last three and has been outscored 211-27 in five league games … RBV has lost five in a row and has been outscored 170-13 in five league games. … Vista won 28-14 last season.

Prediction: Rancho Buena Vista 18, Vista 14

Avocado League

No. 2 La Costa Canyon (9-0, 4-0) at Torrey Pines (4-5, 2-2)

Preview: La Costa Canyon could be without do-everything running back Coby Herman, who was on crutches at the end of last week’s win over Carlsbad. Quinn Roth has thrown for 2,073 yards and 30 TDs. Jackson Maggiore has 33 catches for 697 yards, while Lennox Marcucci has 25 catches for 427 yards. The defense, which has given up just 106 points, is led by linebacker Tanner Doyle, who has 93 tackles. … Torrey Pines has used three QBs this season, with Blake Miller starting the last four games. Ryder Young has 480 rushing yards while Zac Barger has 36 receptions. Joey Levenberg leads the defense with 76 tackles.

Prediction: La Costa Canyon 28, Torrey Pines 21

Palomar League

Mt. Carmel (6-3, 2-2) at No. 10 Rancho Bernardo (7-2, 3-1)

When: 7:15 p.m.

Preview: Kelle Leuck has delivered, throwing for 1,582 yards and 13 TDs after replacing the injured Trevor Taumoepeau. Riley ValeCruz has 73 catches for 795 yards. The Sundevils have rushed for only 970 yards and don’t have a back with more than 248 yards. … Freshman Gaige Weddle has taken over at QB for Rancho Bernardo and has put up 1,055 total yards. Hugo Gonzalez and Jayden Bess are the main WRs.

Prediction: Rancho Bernardo 31, Mt. Carmel 20

Central League

Kearny (6-3, 2-1) at Canyon Hills (3-6, 2-1)

Preview: Brodie Stump has thrown for 2,928 yards and 39 TDs for Kearny. Zaiden Gravely has 68 catches for 1,139 yards and Zeni Reyes averages nearly 20 yards a catch with 13 TDs. … Canyon Hills put itself in position to win a league championship with an upset win over Hoover last week. Freshman running back Ma-Kahi Fields-Cook leads the Rattlers’ offense.

Prediction: Kearny 27, Canyon Hills 21

Metro Mesa League

Mater Dei Catholic (6-3, 3-0) at Sweetwater (5-4, 1-2)

When: 6:30 p.m.

Preview: Mater Dei Catholic has won six in a row after opening with losses to Top-10 teams Cathedral Catholic, Granite Hills and San Marcos. The Crusaders have outscored their last six opponents 231-84 and can win the league title outright with a win. … Sweetwater is led by QB Zaryan Crews, who has 1,819 total yards and 13 TDs on offense and 50 tackles, 24 tackles-for-loss, five sacks and eight interceptions on defense. The Red Devils have given up just 111 points.

Prediction: Mater Dei Catholic 27, Sweetwater 21

Eastern League

University City (8-1, 2-1) at La Jolla (6-3, 2-1)

Preview: Scripps Ranch clinched the Eastern League title, meaning this game is for seeding in the playoffs. … UC’s Quentyn DeMara has thrown for 2,030 yards and 24 TDs. He has two big-time WRs in Nakeem Jones and Drayden Garner. … La Jolla has won two in a row since losing to Scripps Ranch.

Prediction: La Jolla 31, University City 27

Imperial Valley League

Central Union (7-2, 2-1) at Brawley (8-1, 3-0)

Preview: This is the Bell Game, the oldest rivalry in the San Diego Section. … Central can share the league title with a win. Luis Jimenez has thrown for 1,177 yards and 15 TDs. Nick Viesca has 899 rushing yards and 15 TDs. … Brawley put itself in the position to win a league title with a win over Imperial last week. Matthew Guttierez has thrown for 1,319 yards and 20 TDs. Sergio Garcia is averaging nearly 30 yards a catch with 21 TDs. … Central has allowed 122 points over nine games; Brawley has given up 117.

Hoover (6-3) at Crawford (4-5)

Preview: Hoover played without QB Kristian Noriega and RB Sir Autry and lost to Canyon Hills. … Crawford has a pair of weapons in QB Philip Huyn and WR Trevon Blanks.

Nonleague

No. 8 Mount Miguel (7-2) at No. 9 Scripps Ranch (9-0)

Preview: Mount Miguel is led by AJ Stowers, who has thrown for 2,486 yards and 28 TDs. He has three top receivers in AJ Logan, Parris Vernon and Ezelle Buchanan. The Matadors have scored 406 points, but given up 249. … Scripps Ranch has scored 270 points while allowing 126. The Falcons are led by QB Parker Armstrong, RB Ryan Stadtherr and WR Charlie Barajas.
