A Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony took place at Torrey Pines High School on Oct. 25 at halftime of the Torrey Pines varsity football game against Poway High School. TPHS Principal Rob Coppo inducted four TPHS alumni into the TPHS Hall of Fame.
This first round of inductees was announced back in May at the schools 50th anniversary celebration, and a committee has been formed that will be considering additional inductees each year moving forward, according to a news release. This years inductees received their TPHS Hall of Fame jackets, and posed for pictures with the plaques that will be installed in the schools main office entry.
This inaugural group of inductees included the following stand-out alumni of Torrey Pines, the news release stated:
Taylor Steele Class of 1990
While at Torrey Pines, Steele took video and film classes and was inspired to start filming surf videos. He has won awards as both director and producer and is named one of surfing’s “Ten Most Influential People” by Surfer Magazine. Steele’s two decades of experience and 25 award-winning films continue to redefine the ways people think about and experience the art of surfing.
Rachel Buehler (Van Hollebecke) Class of 2003
Buehler fell in love with soccer at a young age. She helped the Falcons win two CIF championships. She went on to Stanford University where she studied human biology and became a star defender and Academic All American. She played over 100 games for the United States National Team and won two Olympic gold medals at the Beijing and London Olympics as well as a silver medal in the World Cup. After retiring from soccer Buehler is now a practicing family medicine physician.
Don McGuire Class of 1984
McGuire has extensive experience in global marketing strategy for various technologies. His oversight and strong marketing expertise led to innovative marketing campaigns and collaborative partnerships that have brought some of the most cutting-edge technology products to market. He is senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Qualcomm. McGuire has been recognized as one of the World’s Most Influential Chief Marketing Officers by Forbes.
Eric Hirshberg Class of 1986
Hirshberg is a two-time CEO, including serving as the president and CEO of video game giant Activision. Hirshberg oversaw the development and marketing of some of the biggest entertainment launches and franchises in history, including Call of Duty, Destiny, Guitar Hero and Skylanders. Before that, Hirshberg was the CEO of the internationally-renowned advertising agency Deutsch LA. Hirshberg’s work with Deutsch and Activision have been recognized by industry leaders and he was named one of the 50 most creative people in business by AdAge.
