Police and fire officials were investigating the death of a person whose body was found in a burning car Sunday morning in Escondido, a police lieutenant said.

It was not immediately known how the person died or what caused the fire, Escondido police Lt. Janice Kuehn said.

Authorities received reports of a burning vehicle shortly before 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the Public Storage facility on Brotherton Road off Centre City Parkway, Kuehn said. Police officers and firefighters both responded to the scene.

Firefighters found the body inside the car after extinguishing the flames, Kuehn said. Police did not release any details about the victim.

Police detectives were leading the investigation, with the help of fire investigators, at least until they could determine whether any type of crime was committed, Kuehn said.

Authorities remained at the scene conducting the investigation as of early Sunday afternoon.
