With a little more than $50,000 in expected Community Development Block Grant funding from the county, the Solana Beach City Council approved a plan Nov. 20 to add two pedestrian ramps throughout the city.

Both proposed locations are along Stevens Avenue, one at San Rodolfo Drive and another at Academy Drive.

According to a city staff report, the city looked to include ramps that “are at locations either with no existing pedestrian ramp or with an existing ramp that does not meet current standards,” referring to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The included ramps are also located along public rights of way in the city’s Safe Routes to School program, which is a national effort for local communities to make the roads to school safer, as well as encouraging walking and biking.

Solana Beach has previously used Community Development Block Grant funding for constructing or improving ramps based on ADA standards. Last year, the locations of the ramps that made the list were Pacific Avenue at the intersections of Ocean Street, Solana Vista Drive, West Cliff Street and Hill Street, as well as the intersection of North Acacia Avenue and Estrella Street.

San Diego County administers the funding throughout the unincorporated areas and the cities of Solana Beach, Del Mar, Imperial Beach, Lemon Grove and Poway.
