A pedestrian was struck and killed by a train Sunday afternoon in Carlsbad, a sheriffs official said.

Witnesses told investigators the victim appeared to intentionally walk in front of the train along Carlsbad Village Drive near State Street around 4:20 p.m., said sheriffs Lt. Noah Zarnow.

No information about the persons age or gender was immediately available.

There have been 23 fatal incidents involving trains so far this year in San Diego County, up from 14 in 2023, according to the county medical examiners office.

The most recent death before Sundays incident was Sept. 20, when a person died after he was struck by a train near Morena Boulevard.
