“Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience” (GUIDE)
Friday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Gus Fernandez from Senior Helpers of San Diego will be sharing the new Medicare program “Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience” (GUIDE) that offers comprehensive care coordination for patients and caregivers living with dementia, as well as access to in-home or facility-based respite care/caregiver services all of which are available at no cost to eligible Medicare beneficiaries.
The Senior Center will be closed Monday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veteran’s Day. Thank you for your service.
Embracing Your Changing Mind with Lisa Randall, M.S.
Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Join us for a discussion on age-related changes in the brain, focusing on practical strategies to reduce stress and ease anxiety about memory loss. Lisa is a health educator, the founder of Integrative Memory, and host of Memory Alive! a weekly interactive zoom class.
Lunch & Tour at Westmont of Carmel Valley
Wednesday, Nov. 13, from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Experience a retirement community with a full spectrum of options in housing and health care, from Active Adult, Independent and Assisted Living, to Memory Care. The tour bus will depart the Senior Center at 11 a.m. and return at 1:30 p.m.
2- Part-Colored Pencils Class with Artist Jan O’Hara
Wednesday, Nov. 13 and Dec. 11, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
Join Jan for a 2-part-colored pencils class where students will learn to draw a stunning rose, with step-by-step guidance, mastering techniques for shading and blending. Please contact the Senior Center for a list of supplies needed. There is a $40 fee paid to the instructor for this 2-part class.
Celebrate Local Author Elizabeth St.John’s Latest Novel “A King’s Intelligencer”
Thursday, Nov. 14, from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. Franny Apsley is drawn into court intrigue when the missing princes bones are discovered in the Tower of London. With secrets unraveling and loyalties tested, she must uncover the truth risking everything to protect the throne and her heart. Liz will talk about discovering the family history and real-life events that inspired her novel. Books will be available to purchase at the event. Reservations are required. Seating & parking is limited.
Brunch & Tour at Vi at La Jolla Village
Tuesday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. -1 p.m. Meet at the Senior Center for roundtrip transportation to Vi for brunch and a tour of the community where residents enjoy a vibrant lifestyle that offers first class services and amenities. The tour bus will depart from the Senior Center at 9 a.m. and return at 1 p.m.

Paint with Alex Schaefer
Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. All level painters are welcome to join us in the studio with working artist and educator Alex Schaefer. Learn techniques to further your painting skills. Bring your own artwork and supplies (acrylic, oil, or watercolor) to work with Alex and fellow artists. There is a $20 fee per class paid to the instructor.
ONGOING CLASSES
Tai Chi / Longevity Self-Care – Monday (weekly) from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Learn Tai Chi and longevity self-care techniques to enhance health, energy, and balance with Dr. Abraham Kim from Synaptic Integrated Medicine. Dr. Abraham brings his background of integrated medicine in neurology and longevity practices to share tips on how to work with the aging process and prevent degenerative neurological conditions. There is a $10 fee per class paid to the instructor.
Open Play Mah Jongg – Monday (weekly) from 10 a.m. noon. Enjoy a friendly game of beginner American Mahjongg, a tile-based game that is enjoyed by individuals throughout the world! A basic understanding of the tiles and rules is required.
Texas Hold’em Poker for Beginners Monday (weekly) from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. This beginners class is designed to teach the fundamentals of Texas Hold’em in a fun and engaging environment. If you’ve never played poker before, this class will provide you with the knowledge and confidence to participate in a friendly game. Instructor George Bullette, Senior Center board president, has years of experience playing poker and will teach basic rules and strategies in a real game setting. Chips and cards are provided, and ongoing open poker play will be available for beginners. This class is ideal for absolute beginners with no prior poker experience.
Calling All Chess Players! – Tuesday (weekly) – 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Come and enjoy a friendly game of chess at the Senior Center and get a workout for your brain! Research has found evidence that playing chess may result in improved brain function, memory, cognitive abilities, and strategic thinking. Each Tuesday, enjoy a friendly game of chess at the RSF Senior Center. All levels of players are welcome. Free instruction is provided for beginners. Tables and playing pieces are furnished.
Self-Compassion for Stress Reduction with Ann Nye, Ph.D – Thursday (weekly) from 9:30 a.m.-9:55 a.m. Lower stress through guided and silent meditation using the works of Jack Kornfield and Pema Chodron. Enjoy a 5-minute guided meditation followed by 20 minutes of silent meditation.
Chair Yoga – Thursday (weekly) 10 a.m.-11 a.m. Peggie Moore, a certified yoga instructor, Reiki Master, and BEWELL Yoga for Cancer teacher, offers a weekly outdoor, in-person chair yoga class. This class will teach you techniques to improve core strength and balance, increase flexibility, and reduce stress. There is a $10 per person fee paid to the instructor. The first class is free.
Conversational Spanish – Friday (weekly) Beginners class 1 p.m. 2 p.m. and Intermediate class 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. Jeannette Caruth learned Spanish solely through conversation and invites you to become more familiar with the language. Each class is a one- hour adventure of hearing and speaking another language. All levels are welcome. There is a $10 fee per class paid to the instructor.
