OCEANSIDE — The nightcap of the CIF-San Diego Section Division 3 girls volleyball championships at MiraCosta College featured two league champions in No. 2 Brawley and No. 5 Santana, who took down No. 1 High Tech San Diego in the semifinals on Tuesday.
The Wildcats, who won the Imperial Valley League title, were able to grind out a four-set victory, 3-1 (27-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22) over the Sultans.
“Feels so amazing,” Brawley head coach Lindsay Rubin said. “They’ve been laying the groundwork all season for this, setting goals, checking them off. This was their far-out goal, but I knew we could slowly chip away at.
“It was a battle for every single point. We were starting to look a little tired. I knew a fifth set could give us some trouble because we were looking a little tired, but mentally, we were still in it. They stayed strong, and they kept battling. But all the credit to Santana. They were hitting hard. They were using every weapon they had.”
Brawley (29-11) secured the opening point in the first three sets. The Wildcats were able to gain momentum as the fourth set progressed. After three Brawley attack errors that cut the lead in half to three, 19-16, Rubin called a timeout to calm her players.
The Wildcats got back-to-back kills from senior Breaunna Rebollar and freshman Lucca Rubin for their 11th and fifth kills, respectively, to take a 23-19 lead.
Then it was Walker, who scored match point for her 11th kill of the night.
Rebollar not only attacked but was her teams primary setter.
“It gives us the opportunity to have everyone go in, no matter what position you play,” Rebollar said of her versatility.
Santana (21-7), which won the Division 4 title in 2021, was led by junior Brooklynn Draheim, who recorded 18 kills and three aces.
Both Santana and Brawley both earned spots in the CIF SoCal Regional Tournament and will hear their seeding Sunday.
