Re Street look different? Ahead of state ban on parking near corners, San Diego paints thousands of curbs red (Nov. 8): I was overjoyed to read the front-page article on the new parking law for the curbs within 20 feet of an intersection. Pedestrians, bikes and autos have been endangered for years by having parked cars, trucks and vans obscure an upcoming cross-traffic intersection.
However, it discouraged me to read that enforcement of this rule — a $65 fine — will initially target uptown and downtown intersections. Even if the curb has not yet been painted red, parking in that 20-foot section will still be in violation after Jan. 1, 2025. However, the beach areas are notoriously known for their parking congestion. Enforcement of this law will be appreciated by many coastal residents.
Let’s get more meter maids and meter butlers out there to pump up enforcement of this new law. The safety of our pedestrians, drivers and bicyclists begs for this kind of safer streets.
