Dogoween raised more than $4,000 for a pair of local pet adoption organizations as it made its third annual return to La Jolla on Oct. 26, this time with a new home at The Lot.

Canines and their human crew were invited to join the costume contest presented by the La Jolla Loves Pets Foundation. Proceeds went to K9 Connection and Amazing Strays.

The festivities also featured booths for local companies and food and drink offerings.

The flagship costume contest was judged by a panel including KPBS reporter Melissa Mae, dog groomer Janetta Nickels and comedian Dave Callans. Jerri Hunt, a former La Jolla Town Council president, and DJ Beau Doiron hosted the contest, with support from DJ Ron Jones.

What made this event special wasnt just the adorable costumes or the funds raised, said organizer Olga Wharton Newman. It was the community coming together — our volunteers, sponsors and participants all united for a cause bigger than themselves.

The La Jolla Loves Pets Foundation is next gearing up for an appearance at the La Jolla Christmas Parade & Holiday Festival on Sunday, Dec. 8. For more information about the event, visit ljparade.com.
