The San Diego Gulls will honor the military before Saturday nights game against the Bakersfield Condors at Pechanga Arena.
The club has given away more than 1,500 tickets to military members for the game. The first 8,000 fans in attendance for the 6 p.m. game will receive a free military-themed Gulls hat, and the club will wear special United States Navy-themed uniforms.
The Gulls will raffle off the game-worn jerseys after the game, with proceeds benefiting the Armed Services YMCA.
The Gulls will host a military-themed pregame tailgate starting at 4 p.m. in Pechangas North parking lot. Fans can play fighter jet video games, climb a rock wall or take on Marines in a pull-up contest. All active and retired military members receive free parking with their military IDs.
San Diego is 4-9 so far this season, good for ninth in the American Hockey Leagues 10-team Pacific Division. They lost 2-1 to San Jose on Wednesday night despite attempting 49 shots, one off the club record. Sam Colangelo scored San Diegos only goal.
G League Clippers to host Suns affiliate on Sunday
The G Leagues San Diego Clippers lost a wild 132-128 to the Valley Suns on Thursday night. Theyll run it back again on Sunday, taking on the Phoenix Suns minor-league affiliate at 6:30 p.m. at Frontwave Arena in Oceanside.
San Diego is 2-1 so far in its inaugural G League season, which is broken up into two segments — the G League Tip-Off Tournament, which runs through next months winter showcase; and the 34-game regular season, which begins Dec. 27.
Nate Darling led the Clippers with a season-high 25 points in Thursdays loss to the Suns; Trentyn Flowers had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Mo Bamba added 13 points and 12 rebounds.
David Stocktons driving layup near the end of regulation enabled the Suns to tie the Clippers, forcing overtime.
The G League uses target scoring to settle overtime games. Stockton delivered a game-winning jump shot to give Valley the four-point win. Stockton, the son of former NBA star John Stockton, finished with 28 points.
USD, UCSD at home
Both USD and UCSD will host mens basketball games on Saturday.
The Toreros will take on Idaho State at noon at Jenny Craig Pavilion, while the Tritons will take on Seattle University at 7 p.m. from LionTree Arena.
USD (1-2) is coming off an 85-76 home loss to Portland State on Tuesday. Keyon Kensie Jr. scored a team-high 20 points, while Kody Clouet and Steven Jamerson II added 13 points apiece. Idaho State (1-2) has lost to Arizona State and USC already this season; the Bengals will stay in California to take on Cal State Fullerton and UCLA after facing USD.
UCSD is 2-1 this season, the lone loss to coming to San Diego State in last weeks opener. Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones leads the Tritons with 19.7 points per game; Tyler McGhie aveages 19.3. Seattle U is 0-3.
Cal State San Marcos (0-2) was set to play Western Washington on Friday night and will take on Seattle Pacific on Saturday, with both games taking place in Azusa. The Cougars will travel to Point Loma Nazarene on Tuesday.
PLNU (4-0) will travel to Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday afternoon ahead of Tuesdays game. The Sea Lions are led by senior guard Coby Barnes, who is averaging 13.5 points per game.
