A 55-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle early Wednesday in Escondido, police officials said.

The incident was reported just before 5:30 a.m. on Via Rancho Parkway near the Westfield North County Mall.

Police arrived on the scene and found a man undergoing CPR by bystanders, officials said in a release. Officers continued CPR but the man was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the man was crossing the parkway when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle remained on scene and neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to have been factors.

The pedestrians name was being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.
