San Diego History Center and Women’s Museum of California reach agreement embarking on a bold new chapter for both institutions

The San Diego History Center and the Women’s Museum of California (WMC) have reached an agreement under which the WMC will merge into and become a program of the San Diego History Center. This partnership unites two of San Diego’s premier nonprofits in their shared mission to preserve and celebrate the region’s history, according to a news release.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), approved by the governing boards of both institutions, marks a significant milestone, combining over a century of service to the community. This agreement allows both organizations to continue their vital work of preserving the region’s history, with a focus on highlighting women’s contributions to San Diego’s rich past.

“For more than four decades, the Women’s Museum of California has showcased the influential women who have shaped the region,” said Sandra Maas, board president of WMC, in the news release. “This partnership allows us to expand our reach and continue inspiring future generations.”

This agreement marks an exciting chapter for both institutions, said Robert J. Watkins, board chair of San Diego History Center in the news release. We are delighted to have the Women’s Museum of California become a program of the History Center. Together, we are not only celebrating the incredible stories of women who have shaped our region, but also strengthening our commitment to preserving the full, multi-faceted history of our vibrant community.”

In 2023, the Prebys Foundation provided a grant to the WMC which became a key catalyst to deepen merger discussions that have led to this agreement.

Under the MOU, WMC staff will become part of SDHC and work will begin to align operations, exhibitions and collections. Both organizations expect to complete the merger by the end of 2025, further solidifying their shared vision and mission for this region’s future.
