Weekend wrap-up: USD, San Diego State revel in soccer success + ' Main Photo'

Samy Kanaan scored twice Saturday as the University of San Diego’s eighth-ranked men’s soccer team scored a 2-0 victory over Oregon State. It wasnt the only soccer success on the weekend: San Diego State’s men’s and women’s soccer teams scored 1-0 wins Sunday that had conference tournament overtones.

Meanwhile, Mesa College’s football team, ranked sixth in California, scored a 35-28 win at Mount San Jacinto behind four touchdown passes by Jax Leatherwood while Point Loma Nazarene’s nationally-ranked women’s volleyball team improved to 17-0 with a pair of wins in Hawaii.

Kanaan, a junior from Rancho Bernardo High School, scored in the 17th minute on a give-and-go sequence with Ethan Warne then added a second goal on a penalty kick two minutes later.

Goalkeeper Donovan Parisian got the shutout as the Toreros defenders held the West Coast Conference’s top scoring team to only three shots. USD is 10-1-2 overall and 4-0-0 in conference play.

Goalkeeper Djibril Doumbia turned in his third straight shutout as the San Diego State men (9-4-3; 6-0-1 in Western Athletic Conference) won 1-0 at Grand Canyon. Andre Puente scored off a header from Reid Fisher as the Aztecs clinched a first-round bye in the WAC tournament. The Aztecs six conference wins have all been by one goal and their nine overall wins are their most since 2016.

Meantime, the Aztec women’s soccer team (7-7-4; 5-2-3 in the Mountain West) clinched a berth in the conference tournament they are hosting starting Nov. 3 by defeating Colorado State 1-0 in their final regular season home game on Chula Vista native Dori Savage’s (Mater Dei Catholic High School) goal in the 87th minute.

Underwood (Scripps Ranch High School) went 11-for-19 for 255 yards and four touchdowns for the Olympians (6-1, 3-1 National-Southern Conference). Wide receiver Jalil Tucker (Lincoln High School) caught four passes for 138 yards with touchdown catches of 40, 64 and 28 yards. Safety Jayden Cortell (Eastlake High School) opened the scoring for Mesa with an 88-yard fumble return.

MiraCosta College’s women’s soccer team won twice — including a 3-2 win over No. 5 nationally-ranked Southwestern College — to improve to 13-3-1 overall with a first-place 12-0-1 mark in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference). Lena Bachman (Valley Center High School) had a goal and an assist while Madison White (Oceanside High School) and Charley Diaz (Carlsbad High School) each had a goal against the Jaguars. MiraCosta has won nine in a row.

Point Loma Nazarene women’s volleyball team is 16th in the NCAA Division II rankings — the highest ever for the Sea Lions. Point Loma has dropped only one set in its last eight matches, going 24-1.

San Diego States women’s volleyball team lost in five sets at Boise State to have its three-match winning streak snapped. The Aztecs are 14-6 overall and 6-4 in conference play. Taylor Underwood had 18 kills and Jasmine Davis 17 at Boise State while Fatimah Hall and Andrea Campos had 31 and 28 assists, respectively.
