A deep dive wasn’t required to break down the University of San Diego’s football game against Dayton on Saturday.
USD’s defense forced four turnovers and permitted just one touchdown as the Toreros earned a 16-10 road win.
Kicker Aiden Lehman did his part as well, booting field goals from 22, 34 and 45 yards.
Matt Ballentine, Brian Coburn and Malachi Cooper recovered fumbles for USD, linebacker Giovanni Iovino forced two of the fumbles and Trey Ortega intercepted a pass.
“I thought our defense played lights-out,” said USD head coach Brandon Moore by phone. “They were locked in. And Aiden has been so consistent all year. (He’s now 15 of 18 on field goals this season.) He’s put us in position to win games.”
The win assured USD of a winning record in Moore’s second season. The Toreros are 6-3, 4-2 in the Pioneer Football League with two games remaining. USD was 4-7 in Moore’s first season. Dayton suffered its third straight loss, falling to 5-3 and 3-3.
The key turnover came right before the half. With USD leading 10-0 and less than 35 seconds to play, Dayton completed a pass inside the USD 5-yard line. But Iovino forced a fumble and Ballentine recovered at the goal line to keep the Flyers out of the end zone.
Running back Logan Gingg gained 175 yards rushing on 28 carries for the Toreros, scoring on a 5-yard run. Wide receiver Ja’seem Reed caught five passes for 66 yards. Eric Haney led USD with 10 tackles, seven of them solo.
