The Poway Community Foundation is narrowing its selection of grant recipients to a dozen finalists who will be announced in early December.
The foundations board of directors expects to award a total of $78,500 to grant recipients.
A celebration with a pool of grant finalists and donors was held Nov. 10 at Templars Hall in Old Poway Park.
“Throughout the next year, the grant committee will follow the grant winners and will be reporting the impact of the grants,” said Ginger Couvrette, a Poway Unified School District trustee and foundation co-chair with her husband, John Couvrette. “We look forward to the work the nonprofits provide in our community and are thankful to be Powegians.”
The Poway Community Foundation formed one year ago with the goal of raising funds for nonprofits in the city under the umbrella of the San Diego Foundation. The aim is to give funds to organizations that are providing services to those in need in the community.
A grant committee has been reviewing applications from 501(c)3 nonprofits that serve the special needs community, seniors, children and those who assist with food insecurity and addiction and promote the arts. The committee has made recommendations for donations to the foundation’s board of directors, with input from partners who have given at least $1,000 to the foundation.

With more than 28 interested nonprofits, the grant committee discussed detailed applications and invited 12 finalists to in-person interviews, said grant committee Chair Cynthia Elizondo.
The Poway Community Foundation is seeking donations at all levels. As a donor advised fund under the San Diego Foundation, the Poway Community Foundation is able to accept donations of cash, stocks and required distributions from retirement accounts, and all donations will benefit Poway-based 501(c)3 nonprofits.
The deadline to be a “founder” donor who contributes more than $5,000 is Friday, Nov. 15.
