Nearly two dozen residents of a senior apartment complex in East Village were displaced and one person was taken to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after a two-alarm fire in one of the units Saturday afternoon, officials said.
We are in the process today of reviewing all the units that were damaged, said Paul Downey, president and CEO of Serving Seniors in San Diego, which oversees the 200-unit Potiker Family Senior Residence on 14th Street near Market Street.
Fire officials said the blaze started around 2:15 p.m. in a mattress in a fifth-floor apartment and appeared to be caused by smoking materials.
All 23 of the displaced residents were taken to long-term-style hotels and were provided with meals to last through lunch on Monday, Downey said.
Most of the damage was water from the sprinkler system, Downey said. Some residents should be able to return on Monday, while others will be out longer if their apartments need more extensive repairs, he said.
More than 90 firefighters were dispatched after the fire was reported and the entire building was evacuated. The Red Cross also provided assistance to some residents. Most residents were allowed to return about three hours later after electricity was restored.
Minimal damage occurred on the first floor of the building that includes recreational and dining areas for the residents. The Potiker residence was built in 2003 as supportive housing for low-income seniors. On-site services include meals, health care, case management and recreation programs.
