College recap: PLNU shines in men’s and women’s soccer; Mesa College runs away with titles + ' Main Photo'

The men’s and women’s soccer teams from Point Loma Nazarene and the men’s and women’s cross country teams from Mesa College had banner weekends.

Both the Sea Lions’ nationally ranked soccer teams clinched second straight regular-season PacWest titles.

Behind hat tricks by Elijah Langford and Austin Lavell, PLNUs sixth-ranked mens soccer team defeated Academy of Arts 9-1 Saturday to improve to 11-2-3 overall and 9-1-1 in conference play. The top-seeded Sea Lions will meet Fresno Pacific on Thursday in the first round of the PacWest Tournament. Fresno Pacific defeated PLNU 1-0 last Thursday despite being outshot 17-2.

Julia Pinnell turned in her ninth and 10th shutouts of conference play, and PLNUs 20th-ranked womens soccer team completed regular-season play with wins of 3-0 over Fresno Pacific and 4-0 over Academy of the Arts. It was the fifth title in six seasons for the reigning national champion women, who are 13-2-1 overall and 10-1 in PacWest play.

Mesa College claimed championships by wide margins at the Southern California Community College Regional Championships at Chaffey College.

All seven Mesa mens runners finished in the top 19 of the race, led by individual champion Ian Rosen (Grossmont High School). The Olympians scored 35 points to 93 for Mt. SAC. Cuyamaca College finished ninth in the men’s race, while Southwestern College was 24th and San Diego City College was 25th.

Rosen completed the men’s four-mile course in 20:42.03. He was followed by Westview High grad Alex Leroy (eighth, 21:02.2); Mira Mesa High grad Allen Malo (ninth, 21:05.1); La Jolla High grad Ronald Wey (10th, 21:05.4); Luciano Roberts (15th, 21:10.1; Mount Miguel High grad Garrett Cloyd (17th, 21:15.9); and Grossmont High grad Josh Edwards (19th, 21:18.0).

Cuyamaca College’s Ivan Guzman placed 27th in 21:26.1.

Reigning state champion Alexis Noble (Clairemont High) placed second in the women’s race, with all six Olympians placing in the top 23. The Mesa women scored 54 points to 114 for Mt. SAC. Southwestern College placed 21st. Noble covered the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes and 2.7 seconds. She was followed by Oceanside High grad Joelle Tonne (third, 19:03.1); Valley Center High grad Natalie Allen (ninth, 19:34.1); Grossmont High grad Suhey Arce (20th, 20:25.2); Isabelle Moret (22nd, 20:35.1); and Patrick Henry High grad Kate Touchet (23rd, 20:36.5)

Elsewhere

• PLNU’s undefeated and 15th-ranked women’s volleyball team (21-0) will play Chaminade Friday at Golden Gym for the regular season PacWest title.

• San Diego State’s women’s soccer season ended with a 3-2 loss to top-seeded Boise State in the semifinals of the Mountain West Tournament on the Aztec Sports Deck. The Aztecs defeated UNLV 3-1 in their first tournament game behind two goals by Kali Trevithick and one by Denise Castro. Trevithick and Grace Goins scored against Boise State. Trinity Coker had three assists in the two games. The Aztecs finish their season at 9-8-4.

• Second-ranked Riverside City College defeated sixth-ranked Mesa Colleges football team 62-41 Saturday in Riverside, although the 7-2 Olympians still have a shot at making the state playoffs going into Saturday’s season finale at Palomar College (4-5). Jax Leatherwood (Scripps Ranch High) completed 30 of 49 passes for 286 yards and five touchdowns at Riverside.

• Mesa College’s women’s volleyball team is 22-1 and has won 13 straight matches heading into Tuesday night’s regular-season finale against Imperial Valley College at home. The Olympians, who are ranked sixth in the state, have clinched the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference title and are the defending state champion.
