The basketball court at Standley Park Recreation Center in University City will be named in honor of John La Chica at a ceremony on Tuesday. The event starts at 6:45 p.m. at Standley, 3585 Governor Dr.

La Chica, a popular member of the community and a longtime advocate for youth sports, died in 2016 after a battle with cancer. He spent many hours at Standley Park, both inside the gymnasium and on the surrounding fields, where he annually coached a youth flag football team even after his children had grown.

La Chica played in the Sunday over-35 league for 14 years. He played in the Tuesday night league there as well, and for years his children organized the league and were scorekeepers.
